Graduates for a smart nation with SIM GE

A new course aims to grow Singapore’s talent pool of data scientists

By Ratna Ramli

July 7, 2019

According to 2018 Emerging Jobs in Singapore report by LinkedIn, data scientists are one of the top five emerging jobs in Singapore. The demand for data scientists jumped 17 times from 2013 to 2018. The study analysed millions of user-input job titles on LinkedIn in the last five years.

Ms Lim Kim Ying, assistant director and head-course development, academic division of Singapore Institute of Management (SIM) Global Education, says: “Employers today can’t find enough graduates to fill their openings for data scientists. We are offering programmes that not only emphasise the applications of analytics, but also equip participants with the core knowledge of data engineering and to tackle the increasing demands for knowledge and skills.”

SIM Global Education introduced two new graduate programmes this year that will help to groom professionals to address the shortage of data scientists locally. They are the Graduate Diploma in Business Analytics and the Master of Science in Data Science suite of programmes. They will provide students with conceptual, skills-based and practical learning essential in the emerging fields of business analytics and data science.

The part-time programmes are suitable for students aspiring to embark on a career in the data world, professionals who are already in the field and wish to upskill themselves, as well as those looking for a mid-career switch.

“It’s a relatively new field of studies and rapidly gaining recognition from the business world as well as technology sectors. Be open-minded and stay curious as this is an evolving field where we shall see many new technologies and applications in the coming decades. Above all, perseverance is always important towards learning and in the forefront of technology,” Ms Lim says.
