Her ambition drives her forward
Curtin Singapore journalism student Sarah Gideon has dreams of becoming a travel and lifestyle writer

Growing up in an artistic family with a carpenter father who plays music and a mother who works as a creative director, Ms Sarah Gideon’s dream has always been to become a writer.
After graduating with a diploma in Motion Graphics and Broadcast Design, she took up a communications degree programme with Curtin Singapore – specialising in Journalism Communication and Web Media.
Thanks to her diploma programme, the 22-year-old became well versed in design tools such as Adobe InDesign, Premiere Pro, but she wants to develop her writing skills more, and learn about news writing.
“I wanted a course that would teach me different types of writing, such as print and radio journalism,” she says.
The bachelor’s programme at Curtin Singapore offers the best of both worlds, according to Ms Gideon. Students in the Journalism Communication specialisation learn reporting skills such as research, interviewing, writing and presenting. They are also introduced to multimedia journalism where stories are told using a mix of audio, video and interactive formats.
The Web Media specialisation provides a pathway to a career in the expanding field of web-based media and communications, from website creation to online community management. It emphasises social media and networking, and course units give students the best of both worlds - practical, hands-on experiences coupled with grounding in core communications concepts.
Ms Gideon’s final decision to study at Curtin was partly influenced by her best friend who was studying at Curtin University in Perth at the time. Her friend had nothing but praise for the university, the largest in western Australia.
When she graduates in March next year, Ms Gideon hopes to find work at an online publication that allows her to cover travel and lifestyle content.
She says: “I can’t wait to produce great content that will grab eyeballs.”
